Don Mattingly was known as "Donnie Baseball" for the way he loved and played the game. He would come up for a cup of tea in 1983. Mattingly would take over first base based on his preformance in 1983. He would be one of the game's best defensive players setting an American League record of 8 Gold Gloves. He would win the American League Batting Title in 1984, 6X All-Star and 1985 American League MVP. He was on his way to the Hall of Fame until he hurt his back in the pre-season in 1984. The Yankees were leading the American League East in 1994 and looked like the team to beat when the season was cut short with the strike and the World Series being cancelled. He had a second shot in 1995 but the Yankees were defeated in extra innings in 5 games against the Mariners. He currently is the only Yankee with his number retired that did not win a World Series. Hat shows moderate wear with his number 23 in black marker. New Era 5950 tagging with correct 7 1/4 size.
