In 1992 the Cubs would acquire McGwire from cross town rivals Chicago White Sox. Sosa would pick up the nick name "Slammin Sammy" when he started hitting home runs in 1995. He would hit 36 home runs with 119 RBIs in 144 games and making his first All-Star team. The following season he would hit 40 home runs with 100 RBIs. Since he was traded to the Cubs, he had gained respect through out the league for his power and arm. In 1998, Sosa and McGwire would compete in the "home run chase", chasing Roger Maris' season home run record of 61. This record had stood since the 1961 season when Mantle and Maris chased Babe Ruth's record of 60. McGwire would open the season hitting home runs; pulling ahead of Sosa at one point by 16 home runs. Sosa would get hot and catch McGwire in August when he hit his 46th home run. On September 8th, McGwire would break the record with 62 then Sosa would hit his 62nd on September 13th. He would finish the season with 66 home runs and McGwire with 70. Sosa would finish his career with 7 all star selections, 1998 National League MVP and 609 career home runs.
