Putting their respective pennant chases on hold, stars from the American and National Leagues lined up on July 9, 1940 for combat of a different sort, that of the eighth Mid-Summer Classic. With Senior Circuit acting as host at St. Louis’ Sportsman’s Park, Boston Bees outfielder Max West touched AL starter Red Rufffing for a three-run homer before a single batter was retired to help lead the National League to a 4-o triumph – the first shutout in All-Star game history. The NL hurlers were anything but hospitable that afternoon, yielding just a pair of singles to Luke Appling and another pitcher Bobo Newsom. Offered here is a unique diamond heirloom that, divided, pays homage to each League’s participants from that historic summer tilt. This 34” Hillerich & Bradsby George McQuinn signature model bat has been evenly sliced in half and showcases the signatures of the ’40 All-Star Game principals on the flat insides! (McQuinn, a St. Louis Browns first baseman, was one of the three players representing the Show Me State that day.) The AL and NL “halves” respectively flaunt 31 and 33 blue-ink autographs, which project “7=9” in overall strength (a few are lesser). With handwritten notations of “AMERICAN LEAGUE ALL-STARS – St. Louis, Mo. July 9, 1940,” the AL Keepsake is signed by Appling, Baker (coach), Boudreau, Bridges, Cramer, Cronin (Mgr), Dickey (clubhouse), DiMaggio (“7”), Feller, Finney, Foxx (“8”), Gordon, Greenberg, Hayes, Hemsley, Johnson, Keefe (Philadelphia coach), Keller, Keltner, Leonard, Milnar, Newsom, Pearson, Ruffing, Shellenback (Boston coach), Travis, Williams (“7”) and 4 illegible scriptings. The National League portion is inscribed “NATIONAL LEAQUE ALL_STARS – SCORE: NATIONAL 4 AMERICAN 0” and features the autographs of Coscatart, Danning, Derringer, Durocher, French, Herman, Higbe, Hubbell, Lavagetto, Lombardi, May, McCormick, Medwick, Miller, Mize, J. Moore, Mulcahy, Nicholson, Ott (“6”), Phelps, Prothro (coach), Schoffner (Not an All-Star), Stengel (coach), Vaughan, Walters, West, Wyatt, and five others. Both items still remain in EX/MT condition. LOA from Steve Grad/PSA DNA and LOA from James Spence Authentication.”
