Just eight days following Yankee manager Casey Stengel's 1949 World Series victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers, Stengel’s hometown of Glendale, California, honored its longtime resident with a special day in his honor. Stengel and his wife Edna were paraded down main street to the steps of City Hall, where Stengel received the key to the city from the mayor. Originating from the Stengel estate is the key to the city of Glendale presented to Stengel on that day. This one-of-a-kind heavy bronze key (2.25 x 6 inches) is beautifully engraved with Stengel’s name and the year, above which is a likeness of a grizzly bear, the official California State Animal. The town name is also listed on the key in relief. No one could have imagined that this celebration would mark the first of five successive Yankees championships, ushering in the greatest dynasty in baseball history. The key accompanied by an original news photo (7 x 7) of Stengel and his wife being driven through the city in 1949, captioned on the verso “Hero of a triumphal home coming parade October 17 was baseball’s beloved Casey Stengel, manager of the victorious New York Yankees, shown with his wife, Edna, riding through Glendale. Hundreds of home-town fans turned out for the welcoming ceremonies at City Hall.”
