Clemens would be drafted in the 1983 draft and would fly through the minor leagues debuting with the Sox on May 15, 1984. He was diagnosed with a torn labrum early in the season which would be successfully repaired surgeon by Dr. James Andrew. He would pitch again in 1985 going 7-5 with a 3.29 ERA. 1986 would be a break out season with 24 wins leading the Red Sox to the World Series, winning the American League MVP and first of his first of-of 7 CY Young Awards. This same season he would throw 3 perfect innings in the All-Star game to win the All-Star game MVP. Quite a year for the youngster. He would pitch 24 seasons and would win 2 World Series, 7 CY Young Awards, Al MVP,
elected to 11 All-Star teams and win 3 pitching triple crowns to name a few.
1996 would be his final season with the Red Sox he recorded 192 wins for the Red Sox, tied with Cy Young for the franchise record and is their all-time strikeout leader with 2,590. No Red Sox player has worn his #21 since 1996.
